Any suggestions?

August 12th, 2008 at 12:35 am

I'm currently reading "Smart Women Finish Rich" by David Bach. It's actually fairly decent ... I like it a lot (again, so far!)

I like Suze Orman's show, but I can't stand her books ... she comes across as incredibly condescending.

Of course I know of Dave Ramsey ...

Do any of you know of books/reading materials you would recommend to an entry-level money guru?

unfortunately i don't have any recommendations (i don't actually read any personal finance books at all) but i did read a fairly interesting book called "How to pay off your mortgage in 5 years - by someone who did it in 3" by Anita Bell. I bought the book at an op shop for 50c, and while it's outdated in todays property market (she bases it on a mortgage of around $175 000 and a personal salary of around $70k a year) i found a lot of tips in it and the main message is: scrimp and save now, and save thousands later on.

Mary Hunt and Debt Proof Living is one of my favorites.

I would read Dave Ramsey's total money makeover. I consider it pretty sound advice.

He'll take you to the point of investing. I would recommend a lot of other books for that starting with Graham the Intellegent Investor.

I was going to say "The Intelligent Investor" but it is pretty heavy.

I like Mary Hunt. Also the wealthy Barber is very easy to read and understand. (David Chilton is the author) also, andrew Tobias' book, the only other investment guide you will ever need is good.

I started reading Suze Orman's "Women & Money" book, but didn't get very far. Maybe it would get better after the beginning, but she spent more time talking about her own personal accomplishments than actually giving useful advice. (So I agree with you there!)
